As always, amazing! Stacia Kane knows how to take a reader for a roller coaster ride of emotions.
This, in my opinion, is how to write a perspective from the hero's POV. It's a fresh story, not just a re-telling. Thank you, Stacia, for this.
I enjoyed getting to see the Bump he knows, the one who took in a frightened orphan boy. I loved seeing the interaction between Terrible and Chess from his perspective.
There was so much that made me hurt for Terrible. I always knew he didn't think he was smart (which we know is a lie) but some of the other things took me by surprise. The things we know that are about to happen, little conversations, that led to events in other books, ripped my heart a little each time I came across it.
The only thing I can say that can be considered a negative is about the Downspeak. While I love it, not having Chess to temper it, made it a little difficult to keep up with. There was a scene between Bump and Terrible that I had to read through a few times to make sure I was understanding it correctly. (That could also be because I was reading at work, on lunch, and I work with loud mouth, obnoxious people. Could be.)
Overall, I loved this glimpse into Terrible's life. It was nothing less than awesome, which is what I expected.
